There are a lot of unlockables in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, including some hidden items that give you some nice boosts, and of course Medals which showcase your “achievements” in the game.
Most unlockables and hidden special items (besides Medals) require you to first beat the Elite Four and become the Pokemon Champion, so you’ll want to focus on that and beat the game first before you start working on these.
Unlock the Friend Safari
The Safari returns in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, now known as the Friend Safari.
This Safari is quite different in that it’s based solely on friends you’ve added in the game. Each friend you add in the game will allow you to catch up to three pokemon in their Friend Safari, one of which is typically a very rare or special pokemon that don’t naturally occur in the game, like starter pokemon, evolved pokemon, and even pokemon from the other version of the game.
To unlock the Friend Safari, you first need to beat the Elite Four. Once you’ve done this, head to the Lumiose City Train Station.
Once you’re there, Professor Sycamore will give you a Rail Ticket which allows travel to Kiloude City.
On the west side of Kiloude City you’ll find a large building with a red roof, which is the Friend Safari.
Unlock the National Pokedex
After you beat the Elite Four, you can unlock the National Pokedex, which covers pokemon outside of the Kalos region.
To unlock the National Pokedex, beat the Elite Four and head to the Train Station in Lumiose City. Professor Sycamore will meet you there and give you a Rail Ticket which will let you ride to Kiloude City, but he will also give you access to the National Pokedex at the same time.
Unlock the Poke Radar
The Poke Radar is nice hidden item that will allow you to locate pokemon that are hidden in tall grass.
To unlock the Poke Radar, beat the Elite Four and head to Lumiose City. Go to the second floor of Professor Sycamore’s lab and speak to the scientist there, and he’ll give you the Poke Radar.
Unlock the Shiny Charm
The Shiny Charm is a special hidden item that makes it about 3x more likely to run into Shiny pokemon in the wild. It takes your chances from about 1 in 4,096 to around 1 in 1,365, which is a huge jump.
To unlock the Shiny Charm, beat the Elite Four and complete the National Pokedex. With the National Pokedex complete, go speak to Professor Sycamore and he’ll give you the Shiny Charm.
Unlock the Oval Charm
The Oval Charm is a special hidden item that increases your chances of finding an egg at the pokemon daycare.
To unlock the Oval Charm, you need to complete the three Kalos Pokedexes: The Central Pokedex, The Coastal Pokedex, and The Mountain Pokedex.
Unlock the Power Ring Upgrade
The Power Ring Upgrade is a special hidden item that will increase your chances of finding Mega Stones between the hours of 8pm and 9pm.
To unlock the Power Ring Upgrade, beat the Elite Four and travel to Kiloude City. If you haven’t been there yet, go to the Train Station in Lumiose City, and Professor Sycamore will meet you there with a Rail Ticket which gives you access to travel to Kiloude City.
In Kiloude City, find and beat your Rival.
After your Rival is beaten, travel to Anister City and go to the Sundial there. Speak to Professor Sycamore there and he will upgrade your Power Ring.
Unlock the Looker Detective Agency
Looker is a Detective that will hire you to do some sidequests for him if you choose.
To unlock Looker, beat the Elite Four and travel to the Train Station in Lumiose City. Professor Sycamore will meet you there if it’s your first time there and give you a Rail Ticket which gives you access to Kiloude City.
Take the rail to Kiloude City to unlock it, and then travel back to Lumiose City. Once you’re back in Lumiose City, you should receive a Holo Caster message from Detective Looker.
Unlock New Trainer Card Colors
Your trainer card is typically Green, but you can unlock new colors for your Trainer card by competing certain tasks.
The colors will unlock in order no matter which task you complete first. The colors that will unlock, in order are: Blue, then Silver, then Gold.
Here are the tasks you can complete to unlock the new Trainer Card colors:
- Beat the Elite Four and current Pokemon Champion
- Capture all of the pokemon in the Kalos Region
- Get a 50 win streak in the Battle Maison
Unlock Wallpapers for your Pokemon Storage Box
Want to spice up your pokemon storage boxes a bit? You can unlock some new wallpapers for them once you beat the Elite Four.
Unlockable Medals
Medals in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are kind of like achievements, they are a basic measure of how well you’ve done in the game and what you have achieved.
