Pokemon X and Pokemon Y - Legendary, How to catch, where to find, gym leaders

Pokemon X and Y – How to Choose a Starting Pokemon (strengths, evolutions, & more!)

October 15, 2013 Posted by Trevor Stewart 3DS

The beginning of another Pokemon game means yet another choice in your starting pokemon.

In Pokemon X and Y, you once again have pokemon representing the three elements of  grass, water, and fire.

This guide gives you some information about each starter pokemon’s fighting style, stats, and different evolutions to help you decide which one you want to accompany you.

Froakie

Froakie is a frog and is the water-type starter pokemon.

Froakie’s best trait is its speed, so it is best used as an evasive fighter. Make your enemies miss, then dish out some physical damage.

Froakie evolves into Frogadier at level 16, and Greninja at level 36, where it becomes Dark-type.

Fennekin

Fennekin is a fox and is the fire-type pokemon of the starters.

Fennekin has a strong special attack stat so look to use this pokemon as a heavy-hitting offensive weapon, focusing on fire elemental attacks.

Fennekin evolves into Braixen at level 16, then reaches its final evolution Delphox at level 36. Delphox is also Psychic-type, giving you access to the powerful Psychic move set.

Chespin

Finally we have the grass-type starter called Chespin.

Chespin develops strengths in attack and defense. Its speed is lacking however, so expect to use the strong defense to brush off your opponents quicker attacks, then deal out some heavy physical damage.

At level 16 Chespin evolves into Quilladin, then to Chesnaught at level 36,where it becomes a Fighting-type.

Who’s Your Favorite?

All of these starting pokemon have the potential to be an asset to your pokemon team and help you be the very best, like no one ever was, but it’s always best to choose the starting pokemon that suits your favorite play style.

Good luck and and catch ‘em all, yo!
