In The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii, initially trying to equip your shield can be quite confusing since the game manual isn’t exactly right in the instructions they give.
You have to press and hold the – button and the B button at the same time to bring up the equip screen. From there you can simply click on your shield to properly equip it.
