There isn’t really a standard lockpicking mechanic in Red Dead Redemption 2, and there are no hidden combinations to either either, so how do you open those locked safes and lock-boxes you come across around the map?
Well, the answer is pretty simple. You blow the crap out of them of course!
Yes, if you want to “unlock” those locked safes and lock-boxes, you’ll want to hit them with a stick of dynamite. You’ll destroy the safe, but the loot inside will be unscathed and ready for you to pick up.
Surprisingly, you can also use throwing knives and tomahawks to open safes and lock-boxes as well, however it takes just the right hit to open them. If you don’t have dynamite on you at the time (and why don’t you?) then it should work in a pinch, but I would suggest always carrying your upper limit of dynamite, which is eight sticks.
Be careful though, since dynamite has a pretty big blast radius. Killing yourself in the process isn’t going to help you much.
Dynamite is pretty easy to find, and fairly inexpensive as well, especially considering the loot you can get from using it. Every weapon store should stock some, and Fence’s sell it as well, and it it only costs $1 per stick. Make a habit of buying more every time you go through town.
