In DragonVale for the Android and iOS systems (iPhone and iPad, etc.) dragon breeding is the name of the game. You breed dragons with other types of dragons, and you’ll get new types of dragons. This dragon breeding guide will help you in your long journey of breeding the different dragons in the game.
In order to breed the different dragons, you need a Breeding Cave which unlocks at level 7, or an Epic Breeding Island which can be purchased for 125 gems at level 13. The Epic Breeding Island gives you a higher chance at breeding the rare hybrid dragons like the rainbow dragon, and also allows you to breed another set of dragons at the same time as your regular Breeding Cave.
Below, I have created a table outlining the basic year round dragon breeding combinations you can perform. The blank boxes mean they can’t (typically) be bred together.

Opposite Element Dragons
Most opposite element dragons can’t breed, like the Lightning and Water, or Earth and Air, however some of these can breed if one of the dragons is a hybrid dragon. For example, the Sandstorm Dragon can be created by breeding an Air Dragon with an Earth hybrid like a Crystal Dragon or Mud Dragon.
Blue Fire Dragon - Breed a Fire Dragon with a Cold hybrid. Fire + Storm is a popular combination.
Current Dragon - Breed a Water Dragon with a Lightning hybrid. Water + Storm, Water + Magnetic, etc.
Dodo Dragon – Breed an Earth Dragon with an Air hybrid. Earth + Chrome, and Earth + Blazing are popular combinations.
Ironwood Dragon – Breed a Plant Dragon with a Metal hybrid. Plant + Chrome is a popular combination.
Malachite Dragon – Breed a Metal Dragon with a Plant hybrid. Metal + Cactus is a popular combination.
Plasma Dragon - Breed a Lightning Dragon with a Water hybrid. Lightning + Fog, Lightning + Rust, etc.
Frostfire Dragon - Breed a Cold Dragon with a Fire hybrid. Cold + Firefly is a popular combination.
Sandstorm Dragon – Breed an Air Dragon with an Earth hybrid. Mud + Air is a popular combination.
Epic Dragons
Epic Dragons are rare hybrid dragons with very low chances of success.
Cyclops Dragon – Breed dragons with Metal, Water, and Lightning. Copper + Seaweed or Magnetic + Swamp or good examples.
Gold Dragon - Breed a fire type with a metal type. Plain Fire + Metal or Flower + Metal are popular combinations.
Leap Year Dragon - Both limited and rare, since it is only available for a few days on a leap year. Breed dragons with a total of four different attributes. Love + Plant seems to be a popular choice.
Moon Dragon - Breed a cold type with a lightning type. Crystal Dragon + Blue Fire Dragon seem to have the best odds of success.
Platinum Dragon – Breed a metal type with a water type. Metal + Water, or Metal + Seaweed are common combinations.
Rainbow Dragon – Fairly random. Small percentage of success on nearly any combination. There are theories out there that the odds seem to go up slightly when breeding rare, limited, and hybrid dragons, but it’s hard to confirm these.
Seasonal Dragon – The only dragon so far that is meant to change appearance over time, as the seasons change. Breed dragons with a total of air, fire, and plant attributes, like Blazing + Plant, Blazing + Tree, etc.
Silver Dragon - Breed a metal type with a cold type. Metal + Cold or Metal + Evergreen are popular combinations.
Solstice Dragon - Both limited and rare. Available during the summer and winter solstices (later part of June and December in the northern hemisphere). Breed an earth type with a Blazing Dragon during the summer or winter solstice.
Sun Dragon – Same as Moon Dragon. Breed a cold type with a lightning type. Crystal Dragon + Blue Fire Dragon seem to have the best odds of success.
Limited Dragons
Limited dragons are dragons that aren’t available all year long, and usually related to a holiday or some other seasonal event.
Apocalypse Dragon – The Mayan end of days are upon us, so get this extremely limited dragon while you can! (December 2012 if you’ve been in a cave) Breed dragons totaling elements of plant, lightning, metal, and cold. Copper + Evergreen, Cactus + Mine, Steel + Ash, etc. It has a 20 hour and 12 minute incubation time.
Bloom Dragon - Available in the spring time. Breed dragons with plant, cold, and lightning attributes. One of these will have to be a hybrid dragon. Storm + Plant seem to be the best mix to get this dragon.
Blue Moon Dragon – Availability is somewhat unknown, since blue moons (two full moons in one month) happen around the globe at different times. Keep an eye on the market, and if you see it available to purchase then you should be able to breed it. Breed a lightning type with a cold type.
Bone Dragon – Available around Halloween. Breed earth and fire types.
Butterfly Dragon – Available around the last half of spring. Breed an air type with a Firefly Dragon.
Century Dragon – The 100th dragon to be released, starting in February of 2013. This dragon will likely not be available again, but it is unknown when it will be taken off the market. Breed dragons with attributes of cold, earth, and water. Cold + Mud or Snow + River seem to be good combinations.
Clover Dragon - Available around St. Patrick’s Day. You need to breed a plant type with a moss type.
Equinox Dragon – Available during the spring and fall equinoxes. Breed a water type with a Blazing Dragon.
Ghost Dragon – Available around Halloween. Breed a cold type with an earth type.
Gift Dragon – Available around Christmas time to about the middle of January. Breed dragons with total attributes of cold, fire, and plant.
Leap Year Dragon - Both limited, and rare. Available only for a few days on a leap year. Breed dragons with a total of four different attributes. Love + Plant seems to be a popular choice.
Love Dragon – Available around Valentine’s Day. Breed dragons with fire, plant, and lightning attributes. Firefly + Plant seems to be a good combination for this dragon.
Lunar Eclipse Dragon – Availability is somewhat unknown, since lunar eclipses happen around the globe quite often. Keep an eye on the market, and if you see it available to purchase then you should be able to breed it. Breed dragons with attributes of air, cold, and earth. Sandstorm + Cold seems to be a popular combination.
Motley Dragon – First available on March 28, 2013 for an unknown duration. Reports say that it can be bred with any two dragons, but others say you breed dragons with fire and plant attributes.
Panlong Dragon - Available around Chinese New Year. Breed dragons with a total of all four basic elements of fire, water, air, and earth. Blazing + Mud, or Fog + Lava are good for this combination.
Paper Dragon – Available at the first anniversary of DragonVale, which ran from Sept. 13 2012 to Sept. 24 2012. Was bred by mixing two dragons with a total of all four elements of cold, plant, fire, and earth.
Reindeer Dragon - Available around Christmas. Breed cold and plant types.
Rose Dragon – Available around Valentines Day. Breed a Flower Dragon with any dragon that has the air attribute.
Sakura Dragon - Available in the spring time. Breed dragons with plant, earth, and fire attributes. One of these will have to be a hybrid dragon. Tree + Flower seems to be the only successful mix at the moment.

Olympic Dragons
The Olympic Dragons are another set of limited dragons that are only available during the Olympics. There are three naturally, named according to the winning medals in the Olympics.
Gold Olympus Dragon - Limited dragon only available during the Olympics. Mix an Air hybrid with a Lightning hybrid, like Blazing + Storm
Silver Olympus Dragon - Limited dragon only available during the Olympics. Mix an Air hybrid with a Lightning hybrid, like Willow + Quake
Bronze Olympus Dragon - Limited dragon only available during the Olympics. Mix an Air hybrid with a Lightning hybrid, like Blazing + Crystal
Gemstone Dragons
Gemstone Dragons were first introduced in May 2012, the first being the Emerald Dragon. All Gemstone Dragons earn gems instead of gold when kept in their habitats, and they aren’t able to breed at all.
Emerald Dragon - Only available during the month of May. Breed a Crystal Dragon with a Lichen Dragon.
Pearl Dragon - Only available during the month of June. Breed a Seaweed Dragon with a Snow Dragon.
Ruby Dragon - Only available during the month of July. Breed a Chrome Dragon with a Scorch Dragon.
Peridot Dragon - Only available during the month of August. Breed a Crystal Dragon with a Cactus Dragon.
Sapphire Dragon - Only available during the month of September. Breed a Rain Dragon with a Mountain Dragon.
Opal Dragon - Only available during the month of October. Breed a Lava Dragon with a Mud Dragon.
Topaz Dragon - Only available during the month of November. Breed a Cactus Dragon with a Firefly Dragon.
Turquoise Dragon - Only available during the month of December. Breed a Poison Dragon with a Swamp Dragon.
Garnet Dragon - Only available during the month of January. Breed a Smoke Dragon with an Obsidian Dragon.
Amethyst Dragon - Only available during the month of February. Breed a Hail Dragon with a Sonic Dragon.
Aquamarine Dragon - Only available during the month of March. Breed an Iceberg Dragon with a River Dragon.
Diamond Dragon - Only available during the month of April. Breed an Ice Dragon with a Mine Dragon.

It depends on what platform you are using for the game. The only way that works for both that I know of is using a Facebook account. If like me you are using the Android version then you can only add friends through Facebook if you are connecting using an Apple device then it is through Game Center, or Facebook. I had to add my friend Rick through his Facebook account since I am using an Android phone to play the game. The point of this is to clarify what platform you are using. Since most people seem to be playing with an Apple platform go to your game center and look for the names that are listed as a header. I bought the gem tree so I could give more gems only to find out it really only lets you give more gems if you have more friends and I only send one a day to Rick. LOL what a waste of money.

No, you can’t breed any limited dragons outside of their available time period. The only exception to this is that some limited dragons can be bred with the same limited dragon if you have multiples, but this doesn’t apply to the gemstone dragons as they can’t breed at all.

Remember that these combinations are not guaranteed, and all dragons require certain level before you can attain them. Once you’re level 17 you can breed every dragon in the game. I will be updating this post with required levels at some point.

My daughter bred a lava and a storm dragon and got a sun dragon. I bred the same two and got a rainbow dragon. I think the first pair that hit the 100 gem attached breeding cave ( that we paid for), make a special dragon, but that it is pretty much random which one u get!

Those are fairly random combinations. There are a lot of combinations to make the Sun Dragon and the Rainbow Dragon, you both just got pretty lucky.

Breed dragons with elements of plant, lightning, metal, and cold. So breed a Copper Dragon with an Evergreen Dragon, a Cactus Dragon with a Mine Dragon, a Steel Dragon with an Ash Dragon, or a Lichen Dragon with a Magnetic Dragon, etc. The Apocalypse Dragon will have a 20 hour and 12 minute incubation time.

Ive tried alll of your guys combos, not a single one has worked, I have all LEVEL 10 dragons, Ive tried about 4 to 5 times per combo, basically 10 times flippin them over, ex – panlong + mud, then mud + panlong… not a single combo has worked for me. :/

Our 3 yr old was breeding random dragons and got a Fireworks Dragon. I haven’t seen that one come up in any breeding lists, does anyone know what the combination may have been?

Just an FYI Dizle, it says Metal and Plant are incompatible in Dragonvale…am currently trying to breed Plain metal with Plant hybrids, hoping to get the Malachite dragon lol

Sorry because I know this is a repeat question, but I can’t find the answer. I have sent friends request thru the game center and got the confirmation. I see them in my game center friends list, but they do not show up in the friends list thru Dragonvale for me to visit, gift etc. do I need to do something more to have them show up? It just say “invite your friends or login to Facebook” I don’t use Facebook to play any of these games.

Try cold lv.10 on the left and firefly lv.10 on the right. Works for me i got 2 that way. It’s about 70% chance.

I was trying to breed a crystal and blue fire dragon to get a moon dragon and got the solstice dragon. Both dragons were level 10 if that helps?

I know this sounds weird but, when I was trying to breed a Blue Fire dragon with a Fire Dragon and a Storm Dragon ( both level 10 ) I somehow got a rainbow dragon in a normal breeding cave.

Ive found a very good combo for breeding rare dragons. Ive bred the crystal and lichen dragons and have received 7 rainbow dragons 4 sun dragons and an emerald dragon in a matter of a few days. It doesnt work every time obviously but i also used gems to speed up breedig and hatching. Ive tried all the above combos for rare dragons and have never been successful with any, this is the best ive found.

Hi I got a rainbow dragon when trying to bread a panlong using mud and blazing, I know this sounds odd, I am still trying to get a panlong it’s now been over 5days of breeding for the same two dragons

I figured out how to get a solstice dragon and a rainbow dragon. For solstice try a mud and a blazing dragon. For rainbow keep getting a fire fly dragon but don’t give up that easily if the egg takes 48 hours you’ll know it’s a rainbow dragon. If you don’t believe me get the dragon vale breeding guide it tells you how to get every dragon so you’ll know every thing
