In Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS, you can do tricks in the air which will give you a small boost if timed correctly.
To do a trick, you must hop (press the R button) right at the edge of a ramp. If timed correctly, you will perform a trick in the air, and when you land you will get a short boost.
