There has been a lot of speculation about what Grand Theft Auto Online will be. Will Grand Theft Auto 5 (aka GTA V) simply be an online integrated game? Will it be the same game, but with an online mode similar to Red Dead Redemption?
Finally, all of the speculation has been squashed thanks to an exclusive interview with Rockstar North President, Leslie Benzies by the guys over at CVG.
According to Leslie, Grand Theft Auto Online will be a totally separate game, just simply on the same game disc.
“We want it to be known as a different entity, a separate thing, and it’ll grow on its own. It’ll be GTA Online; it’s not part of GTA V. Obviously it’s set in the GTA V engine, but it’s going to grow and evolve into its own thing.”
Different stories, different characters, different stats, different worlds.. all of that means it’s a completely separate game.
Personally I like this move. I was worried about the games being joined into one. I didn’t enjoy the idea of someone intruding on my world Dark Souls style to jack all of my money in my single player campaign.
It also adds a lot more replay value to the games in general. If you finish GTA 5 and get tired of rolling around in tanks blowing stuff up for fun, you’ll essentially have an unlimited world to reek havoc in.
Leslie talked about a lot in the interview. Player generated content, purchasing properties and stocks, insuring your vehicles.
Check out the interview if you haven’t yet. It will wet your lips quite a bit before the big launch in under a month.
