You may have a problem with SimCity 4 running slowly. We all have! Just view the forums about it. I have tried to run SimCity 4 on three top of the line systems with monster video cards and it still runs slow. SimCity 4 has to perform a lot of calculations and there are usually a lot of items on the screen, hence you might have problems with the game moving along quickly no matter what kind of hardware you’re running. Here are a few tips to help speed up the game a bit.
1. Check the graphics settings. Set everything to Medium or Low. It’s almost impossible to run the game without it being choppy if anything is set to High.
2. Try Software rendering instead of Hardware rendering.
3. If you want time to advance quicker, zoom into an area of your city that has nothing built. No cars, nothing. The game will run a bit faster because it doesn’t have to spend time rendering items on the screen.

If you need to make extra money, it’s good to have the rewards such as the Federal Prison, Army Base, Toxic Waste Dump and Missile Range. You can force SimCity to unlock all of these rewards with the following code:
1. In the game, hold down CTRL and press X to bring up the screen to enter the code.
2. Enter the code you don’t deserve it and press Enter.
Now you can build all of the rewards in your city.

Save money in your city in SimCity 4 by removing the need for water with this cheat:
1. In the game, hold down CTRL and press X to bring up the screen to enter the code.
2. Enter the code howdryiam and press Enter.
Now there’s no need to waste money building any water pumps or towers for your citizens.

You can remove the need for your citizens to have power in SimCity 4 with this cheat:
1. In the game, hold down CTRL and press X to bring up the screen to enter the code.
2. Type fightthepower and press Enter.
Now you have no need to build any polluting power plants since power is no longer needed.

Is your city money running low? Cheat a little bit and add $1,000 to your cofers with this cheat:
1. In the game, hold down CTRL and press X to bring up the screen to enter the code.
2. Enter the code weaknesspays and press Enter.
You should now have $1,000 more in free money.
You can use this command as many times as you like. It’s easy to repeat it by pressing CTRL + X then pressing the up arrow then Enter over and over again. Pressing those keys in that order over and over can give you access to unlimited money.

I still love the SimCity series of games. It’s too bad EA took it over and pretty much ruined the series with SimCity Societies. I still play SimCity 4 and I love it. Especially when you have the Rush Hour expansion pack. The challenge of controlling your traffic flow is difficult, just like with a real city. However, the game is very unrealistic in many ways.
Thankfully, there are mods available still for SimCity 4 that greatly improve the gameplay. My favorite is the NetworkAddon mod. It greatly improves the realism of the game. Now even though the game is 5 years old, the utility I get out of it is renewed.
