Nexus 7: How to Restart Locked Tablet

Every now and again, your Google Nexus 7 tablet by Asus is bound to get locked up and become unresponsive. If that happens, you can restart the device fairly easily.

Restarting the device won’t erase any data, it will just shut down the tablet and boot it back up again. Since you can’t access the battery on the tablet, you restart it with button presses.

To restart the tablet, simply press and hold the power button for about 8 to 10 seconds. The screen will go black, and then you’ll see the Google logo again, and the tablet will boot back up like normal.

My Nexus 7 has frozen. It cycles from the “X” to the start up screen. I can access anything. I’ve tried to reboot it by holding down the power button for more than 10 seconds and still nothing. I’ve also held down the power button and the volume button and still nothing. Any suggestions on how to fix it would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,
My screen locks randomly. If I have patience, it eventually unlocks. (At least 2 mins). Or I can do a restart like you suggested above.
My nexus 7 has not been rooted and it’s very random. I can be watching a movie, on Facebook or just scrolling through my folders.
Any ideas what I can do to stop this happening?
    Any help would be appreciated

Hi there. Not a very useful information here. When you hold the power button down the screen does not go black. In fact a message comes up asking if you want to power off the device. You do so. Then boot the device up and same problem. Thanks for trying anyway.

This guide is for simply restarting the tablet when it temporarily locks up, not for doing a hard reset which is sounds like you need, which is over here.

And the reset does work, you need to hold the button longer. If you hold it for about 8 seconds the device restarts with no other button pressing.

My mom lives in NC and I live in NM. Recently I gave her a Nexus 7 tablet. Today I was talking with her and she said that she can’t unlock her tablet. Any advice? Thanks.
